General background: Childhood reminiscence, from hope to disillusion (leading up to independence and its outcomes); the age of uncertainty, when identity and fate were challenged by colonial and post-colonial warfare; reflection on crimes in the name of change, progress and ‘revolution’; civil war and post-colonial kleptocracy.
